A detailed 1884 study of a Spahi cavalryman by French military artist Jean-Baptiste Édouard Détaille, capturing the precision of his uniform and equipment.
This work by Jean-Baptiste Édouard Détaille, dated 1884, depicts a Spahi, a member of the light cavalry regiments of the French colonial army recruited from the indigenous populations of the Maghreb. Détaille, known for his meticulous attention to military uniforms and equipment, captures the subject in a standing profile. The figure wears a traditional turban, a heavily embroidered jacket, and voluminous trousers, with a sabre resting at his side.
The drawing demonstrates the artist's technical precision. Through the use of graphite and wash, Détaille creates a sense of volume and texture, particularly in the rendering of the fabric folds and the metallic sheen of the sword. The background remains minimal, allowing the focus to rest entirely on the figure and his attire. This approach reflects the artist's background as a student of Jean-Léon Gérôme, where accuracy in historical and ethnographic detail was prioritised.
During the late nineteenth century, French military art often explored themes related to colonial expansion. Détaille was a prolific chronicler of the French army, and his works are frequently cited for their documentary quality. This study provides a clear view of the uniform worn by the Spahis during the period, reflecting the intersection of French military aesthetics and North African traditional dress. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the figure complemented by the diagonal line of the sabre. The work serves as a record of the visual culture associated with the French military presence in North Africa, rendered with the disciplined hand of a master of the genre.
