A 1948 oil painting by Max Beckmann, featuring a potted plant framed by heavy black geometric lines, reflecting the artist's distinct Expressionist style.
Max Beckmann painted Souvenir of Chicago in 1948 during his tenure in the United States. The work displays his characteristic approach to spatial construction, employing heavy black outlines that act as a grid or cage, separating the viewer from the interior scene. This structural device creates a sense of tension, typical of his post-war output where the physical world appears fragmented and compressed.
The composition centres on a potted plant, likely a calla lily, rendered with sharp, angular forms. The background features a blue-toned interior, suggesting a domestic space, yet the presence of the thick black bars introduces an element of confinement. Beckmann often used such motifs to convey a psychological state of displacement. The colour palette is dominated by deep blues, stark blacks, and the pale yellow of the flower, which provides a singular point of visual relief against the otherwise sombre tones.
Beckmann moved to the United States in 1947, and this work reflects his observations of American life through his distinctively European lens. The title suggests a personal memento, yet the execution remains detached and analytical. The brushwork is deliberate, with paint applied in thick, opaque layers that define the forms without softening their edges. The work avoids sentimentality, focusing instead on the formal arrangement of objects within a restricted field of vision. By framing the subject behind a dark, geometric structure, Beckmann forces the viewer to engage with the painting as a constructed object rather than a window into a naturalistic scene. This piece remains a clear example of his ability to imbue everyday objects with a sense of unease and structural rigour.
