Beskrivning
A striking etching from Goya's Los Caprichos series, depicting a satirical and grotesque scene through masterful aquatint technique.
Sopla (Blow) is plate 69 from Los Caprichos, a series of eighty aquatint etchings published by Francisco Goya in 1799. This work demonstrates the artist's mastery of tonal variation through the use of aquatint, which allows for the soft, atmospheric shadows that define the scene. The composition depicts a grotesque gathering of figures, a recurring theme in Goya's critique of contemporary Spanish society, superstition, and the corruption of the clergy and aristocracy.
In this specific image, a central figure holds a smaller, naked individual by the legs, positioning them to blow air into a fire. The surrounding figures are rendered with distorted features, suggesting a nightmarish or supernatural context. Goya employs sharp, biting lines for the figures' anatomy, contrasted against the murky, dark background created by the aquatint process. The title, Sopla, translates to 'Blow', which serves as a literal description of the action while also carrying colloquial connotations of mockery or derision common in the Spanish vernacular of the period.
Los Caprichos functioned as a social commentary, intended to expose the follies and vices of human nature. By moving away from the formal portraiture of his earlier career, Goya utilised the print medium to reach a wider audience and explore darker, more psychological themes. The work remains a significant example of the artist's ability to blend social satire with a haunting, personal vision. The stark contrast between the illuminated figures and the surrounding darkness creates a sense of unease, typical of Goya's later, more introspective works. This print provides a clear view into the artist's critical perspective on the irrationality he perceived in the world around him, executed with technical precision and a bold, uncompromising aesthetic.
