An expressive etching by Dutch artist Jan Karel Jacob de Jonge, depicting a soldier in period attire raising a glass in a toast.
This etching by Jan Karel Jacob de Jonge captures a moment of conviviality, featuring a soldier depicted with a glass raised in a toast. The work reflects the nineteenth-century interest in historical genre scenes, where artists often looked back to the seventeenth-century Dutch Golden Age for inspiration. The soldier wears a wide-brimmed hat adorned with feathers, a common trope in period depictions of military figures, which adds a sense of theatricality to the composition.
The technique employed is characteristic of the etching medium, utilising varied line weights to define the form of the figure and the texture of his attire. De Jonge uses cross-hatching to build shadow, particularly around the figure and the background, which helps to isolate the soldier from the surrounding space. The expression on the soldier's face is one of direct engagement, as he looks towards the viewer with a knowing smile. This interaction creates a sense of immediacy, drawing the observer into the scene.
As a Dutch artist active in the mid-to-late nineteenth century, de Jonge worked within a tradition that valued technical precision and narrative clarity. The print exhibits a focus on character study, common in the graphic arts of the period. The background remains largely suggested rather than fully realised, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the figure and his gesture. This approach provides a clear view of the artist's hand, showing the deliberate marks made on the plate. The work is a fine example of the period's fascination with historical costume and the portrayal of everyday life, rendered with a light, expressive touch that avoids excessive detail in favour of capturing the spirit of the subject.
