A woodblock print from the Soken Landscape Picture Album by Yamaguchi Soken, featuring ink-wash style depictions of trees and rock formations.
This print originates from the Soken Landscape Picture Album (Soken sansui gafu), a collection of woodblock-printed designs by the Japanese artist Yamaguchi Soken. Active during the Edo period, Soken was a student of Maruyama Okyo and a notable figure within the Shijo school of painting. This school prioritised direct observation of nature, combined with the technical precision of traditional ink wash methods.
The composition displays a characteristic economy of line. The artist uses varying ink densities to define the gnarled texture of the tree and the solid mass of the rock. The right panel features a tree with twisted branches, rendered with bold, expressive strokes that suggest age and resilience. The left panel provides a counterpoint, focusing on a large rock formation accompanied by sparse bamboo stalks. The negative space is utilised to suggest depth and atmosphere, a common feature in Japanese woodblock printing of this era.
Soken's work in this album functions as a manual for students and enthusiasts of the period. It demonstrates how to translate the fluid movement of a brush into the structured medium of woodblock printing. The lines are deliberate, capturing the essence of the subject without unnecessary detail. The paper tone and the monochromatic ink palette reflect the aesthetic values of the time, where simplicity and clarity were held in high regard. This print offers a clear view into the pedagogical practices of the Shijo school, showing how artists taught the depiction of natural elements through repeated study and disciplined technique. It remains a fine example of the intersection between professional painting and the dissemination of art through printed books in eighteenth-century Japan.
