A traditional Chinese ink wash painting by Yun Xiang, depicting a serene, snow-covered mountain scene with bare trees and calligraphic inscriptions.
This ink wash painting by Yun Xiang, a scholar-painter active during the transition from the Ming to the Qing Dynasty, captures a quiet, wintry mountain scene. The work belongs to an album created for the official and art patron Zhou Lianggong. Yun Xiang, also known by his courtesy name Xiangshan, was associated with the orthodox tradition of literati painting, which prioritised personal expression and brushwork over strict realism.
The composition features a cluster of bare trees in the foreground, their branches rendered with precise, dry brushstrokes that suggest the stillness of a cold day. Behind these, rounded mountain forms emerge through subtle ink washes, creating a sense of atmospheric depth. The artist uses the negative space of the paper to represent snow, allowing the texture of the material to contribute to the overall visual effect. A small structure is tucked into the lower right, providing a human element to the otherwise desolate, frozen environment.
Calligraphy is integrated into the upper sections of the composition, a hallmark of the literati style where poetry and painting function as a unified artistic statement. The red seals provide a visual counterpoint to the monochromatic ink, marking the ownership and provenance of the piece. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where artists sought to convey the internal state of the scholar through the depiction of nature. The restrained palette and focus on brush technique demonstrate the technical control required in traditional Chinese ink painting. This print captures the subtle tonal variations of the original, preserving the delicate balance between the dark, defined lines of the trees and the soft, misty quality of the distant peaks.
