A refined triptych of hanging scrolls by Chōbunsai Eishi, depicting the classic seasonal themes of snow, moon, and cherry blossoms with elegant figures.
This triptych of hanging scrolls by Chōbunsai Eishi presents a classic Japanese thematic triad: snow, moon, and cherry blossoms. These subjects, known as 'setsugekka', possess a long history in East Asian art and literature, representing the beauty of the natural world across the changing seasons. Eishi, a former samurai who transitioned to the ukiyo-e school, brings a refined sensibility to these compositions, moving away from the more exaggerated proportions found in the works of his contemporaries.
The central scroll features a bijin, or beautiful woman, standing beneath a flowering cherry tree. Her posture is elegant, and her attire is rendered with subtle detail. The flanking scrolls provide the atmospheric context for the series. The left scroll depicts a serene moonlit landscape, while the right scroll captures a winter scene with snow-dusted terrain. The inclusion of calligraphy on each scroll integrates the visual elements with poetic tradition, a common practice in Edo-period painting that invites the viewer to contemplate the relationship between image and text.
Eishi was particularly noted for his depictions of courtesans from the Yoshiwara district. In this work, he balances the human figure with the broader environment, creating a sense of harmony. The muted colour palette, dominated by soft earth tones and delicate washes, reflects the sophisticated aesthetic preferences of the period. The scrolls demonstrate the artist's ability to convey mood through minimal means, relying on clean lines and balanced negative space. This set is a fine example of the high-quality painting produced by ukiyo-e artists for a discerning clientele, moving beyond the mass-produced woodblock print format to offer a more singular, contemplative experience.
