A 1967 work from Jean Dubuffet's Hourloupe cycle, featuring his signature red, blue, and black graphic style.
Jean Dubuffet created Site to the man sitting in 1967, a period during which he developed his Hourloupe cycle. This series is defined by a restricted palette of red, blue, black, and white, alongside a distinct graphic language of interlocking, cell-like forms. The work rejects traditional perspective, opting instead for a flat, puzzle-like surface where the figure and the background merge into a single, continuous field of activity.
The composition relies on heavy black outlines that contain areas of solid colour or parallel hatching. These lines create a sense of constant motion, as the eye moves across the surface without finding a single point of rest. The central figure, while identifiable as a seated person, is fragmented and integrated into the surrounding environment. This approach reflects Dubuffet's interest in the raw, unmediated expression of the human mind, often associated with his promotion of Art Brut.
By limiting his visual vocabulary to these specific colours and patterns, Dubuffet forces the viewer to engage with the structure of the image rather than its representational content. The work functions as a mental map or a site of cognitive activity, where the distinction between the subject and the space it occupies is intentionally blurred. The result is a dense, rhythmic arrangement that prioritises graphic clarity over depth or naturalistic rendering. This piece remains a characteristic example of the artist's mature style, demonstrating his ability to transform mundane subjects into complex, abstract patterns that challenge conventional ways of seeing.
