A striking early sixteenth-century Dutch woodcut by Jan Ewoutsz. depicting the folkloric figure of Sinte Aelwaer accompanied by various animals.
This woodcut by the Dutch artist Jan Ewoutsz. depicts the figure of Sinte Aelwaer, a character rooted in Northern European folklore and religious tradition. The composition presents a woman mounted upon a donkey, accompanied by an assortment of animals. She holds a cat in her raised right hand, while a small pig rests in her lap and a bird perches upon her head. The inclusion of these creatures, often associated with domestic life or symbolic attributes in medieval and early modern iconography, creates a scene that balances religious allusion with the vernacular character of the period.
The print exhibits the characteristic line work of early sixteenth-century Dutch woodcutting. The artist employs clear, decisive strokes to define the contours of the figures and the texture of the animals. The drapery of the woman's clothing is rendered with parallel hatching, a technique used to suggest volume and shadow within the limitations of the woodblock medium. The donkey is depicted in profile, walking across a sparse, rocky ground, while a simple frame encloses the entire scene.
Jan Ewoutsz. was active during a period when printmaking became a primary vehicle for the dissemination of religious and secular imagery. This work reflects the stylistic conventions of the Northern Renaissance, where the focus remained on clear narrative representation and the precise observation of form. The presence of the monogram on the stone in the lower left corner serves as the artist's signature, a common practice for printmakers of the era to establish authorship. The image provides a glimpse into the visual culture of the Low Countries, where such prints were produced for a growing market of collectors and those interested in traditional folklore. The stark contrast between the black ink and the paper surface ensures that the details of the animals and the central figure remain the primary focus of the viewer.
