A delicate ink study by the Jaipur court painter Sahib Ram, depicting two figures engaged in musical performance.
This drawing by the Jaipur artist Sahib Ram depicts two female figures in profile, a common convention in 18th-century Indian court painting. The primary figure holds a sarinda, a bowed string instrument, while the secondary figure appears to be singing or adjusting her jewellery. The work is executed in fine, precise ink lines, characteristic of the preparatory drawings or 'charbas' used in the royal workshops of Jaipur.
Sahib Ram was a court painter active in Jaipur during the late 18th century. He is known for his mastery of portraiture and his ability to capture the refined aesthetics of the Rajput court. This specific piece demonstrates the meticulous approach to anatomy and ornamentation that defined the period. The artist focuses on the delicate rendering of facial features, such as the almond-shaped eyes and the subtle curve of the nose, alongside the detailed depiction of traditional jewellery and textiles. The composition is balanced, with the two figures overlapping to create a sense of depth despite the two-dimensional nature of the medium.
As a study, the work provides insight into the technical process of Indian miniature painting. The clean lines suggest it was intended as a guide for further painting or as a record of a specific composition. The lack of colour allows the viewer to focus entirely on the draughtsmanship and the grace of the figures. The sarinda player is positioned with a sense of poise, her hand resting naturally on the instrument, while the singer behind her adds a narrative element to the scene. This piece is an example of the high level of skill maintained by court artists who served the Maharajas of Jaipur, reflecting the cultural focus on music and courtly refinement during this era.
