A 1852 cut paper silhouette portrait of Madame Eugène de Block-Looz by the Belgian sculptor Charles Auguste Fraikin.
This work is a cut paper silhouette depicting Madame Eugène de Block-Looz, created by the Belgian sculptor Charles Auguste Fraikin in 1852. While Fraikin is primarily recognised for his marble statuary and public monuments, this piece demonstrates the nineteenth-century practice of creating profile portraits through the precise cutting of black paper. The silhouette captures the subject in a strict profile view, a format that gained popularity as an accessible and immediate method of portraiture before the widespread adoption of photography.
The composition is defined by the stark contrast between the solid black form of the subject and the plain, light-coloured background. The outline of the profile is clean and deliberate, capturing the specific features of the sitter, including the shape of the nose, the line of the chin, and the arrangement of the hair. The paper shows signs of age, including subtle surface texture and minor imperfections, which provide a sense of the object's history. The handwritten inscription at the bottom identifies the sitter and the artist, confirming the provenance of the work as a personal or commissioned portrait from the mid-nineteenth century.
Fraikin, who was based in Brussels, was a prominent figure in the Belgian art scene of his time. His ability to translate the three-dimensional form of a human head into a two-dimensional silhouette reveals his understanding of proportion and contour. The work is an example of the intersection between formal sculpture and the more intimate, domestic art forms that were common in the Victorian era. It remains a clear record of an individual from the period, preserved through the simple yet effective medium of paper cutting.
