Albert Bierstadt, a central figure of the Hudson River School, produced this work during a period when he was actively documenting the American West. The painting captures the rugged, snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada range, rendered with the technical precision that defined his career. Bierstadt travelled extensively throughout the region, creating numerous oil sketches on site, which he later refined into large-scale studio compositions.

The composition is structured to draw the eye from the dark, shadowed foreground of dense coniferous forest toward the illuminated, jagged summits in the distance. The contrast between the deep, cool tones of the lower slopes and the bright, white snow against the clear blue sky creates a sense of immense scale. Bierstadt utilised light to define the geological forms, ensuring the craggy rock faces and glacial valleys appear distinct.
