A refined eighteenth-century etching by Girolamo Carattoni depicting the Tiburtine Sibyl, Albunea, captured in a moment of scholarly contemplation.
This print by Girolamo Carattoni depicts the Tiburtine Sibyl, also known as Albunea, a figure from classical mythology. The composition draws upon the tradition of representing prophetic figures in a scholarly or contemplative state. The Sibyl is shown in profile, her gaze directed towards the viewer while her hand rests upon an open book, quill in hand, suggesting the act of recording divine or historical knowledge. Her head is wrapped in a turban, a common iconographic element used by artists to denote her ancient, eastern origins.
Carattoni employs a refined technique of etching and engraving to achieve a range of tonal values. The background is rendered in deep, dark tones, which pushes the figure forward and creates a sense of volume. The drapery of her garment is handled with precision, showing the weight and fold of the fabric through careful cross-hatching. The lighting is focused, illuminating the face and the pages of the book, which serves to draw the eye to the intellectual activity of the subject.
Below the image, the print includes a formal inscription and a coat of arms, indicating its function as a commemorative or dedicatory work. Such prints were often produced to circulate images of classical subjects or to honour specific patrons, in this case, Monsignor Agostino M. de Negrete e Adorno. The inclusion of the location, the Biblioteca Vallicelliana in Rome, suggests that the original painting or drawing upon which this print is based was held in that collection. This work reflects the late eighteenth-century interest in classical antiquity and the systematic documentation of historical and religious iconography through the medium of printmaking. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition are characteristic of the period, prioritising order and academic rigour in the depiction of mythological subjects.
