A 1911 oil painting by George Bellows depicting a solitary house on a rugged Maine cliffside overlooking the ocean.
George Bellows painted Shore House in 1911 during a period when he frequently visited the coast of Maine. This work captures a solitary structure perched upon a grassy cliff, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The composition relies on the contrast between the solid, earth-toned headland and the expansive, turbulent blue water. Bellows employs broad, confident brushstrokes to define the forms of the terrain and the rhythmic movement of the waves crashing against the rocks below.
The house itself is rendered with a cool, blue-grey palette that echoes the tones of the sea and sky. A single utility pole stands beside the building, introducing a vertical element that breaks the horizontal sweep of the horizon. This inclusion of modern infrastructure within a natural setting is characteristic of Bellows, who often observed the intersection of human activity and the environment. The light in the painting suggests a clear, perhaps breezy day, with shadows cast by the house indicating the position of the sun.
Bellows was a member of the Ashcan School, a group known for their interest in the realities of American life. While he is often associated with urban scenes of New York City, his coastal works demonstrate a similar focus on direct observation and physical presence. He avoids romanticising the scene, opting instead for a grounded depiction of the rugged coastline. The paint application remains visible throughout the canvas, providing a sense of texture that conveys the tactile quality of the grass and the weight of the water. This print reproduces the original oil painting, maintaining the balance of colour and the specific atmospheric conditions captured by the artist during his time in Maine.
