This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a scene from the Shono station along the Tokaido road. The Tokaido was the primary route connecting Edo and Kyoto during the Edo period. Hokusai produced this series early in his career, focusing on the daily activities and travellers encountered along this busy thoroughfare.
The composition features a figure riding an ox, led by a companion on foot. The pair passes a stone marker, which provides a sense of place and scale. Behind them, a small structure sits near a tree, while a stream flows to the left. The artist employs a clear, graphic style, using defined outlines and a controlled palette to delineate the figures and their surroundings. The print captures a moment of transit, reflecting the transient nature of life on the road that defined the Ukiyo-e genre.
Hokusai is widely recognised for his later work, particularly his series of views of Mount Fuji, but his earlier prints demonstrate his mastery of the woodblock medium and his keen observation of human activity. Katsushika Hokusai was a visionary Japanese artist whose influence stretched far beyond his lifetime.
