A precise ink study of the Hindu deity Shiva in the Urdhvatandava dance pose, featuring traditional iconographic details and architectural framing.
This ink drawing depicts the Urdhvatandava, a specific form of the cosmic dance performed by the Hindu deity Shiva. In this iconography, Shiva is shown with one leg raised vertically, a posture associated with his victory over the goddess Kali in a dance competition. The figure is multi-armed, holding various symbolic implements, and is framed by a prabhamandala, or circular aureole of fire. Below the deity, the figure of Apasmara, the demon of ignorance, is crushed underfoot, a standard element in the Nataraja and Urdhvatandava iconographic traditions.
The composition is structured vertically, suggesting it may have been a preparatory study for a temple pillar carving or a sculptural relief. The upper section features a kirtimukha, or face of glory, which is a common protective motif found in South Indian temple architecture. Below this, the drawing incorporates architectural elements, including a capital and base, which provide a sense of scale and context for the central figure. The surrounding figures, likely devotees or secondary deities, are rendered in a style consistent with classical Indian temple sculpture.
The line work is precise and uniform, characteristic of technical drawings used by master craftsmen to document or plan complex sculptural programmes. By focusing on the outline rather than shading or colour, the artist prioritises the clarity of the pose and the accuracy of the symbolic attributes. This approach allows for the study of the proportions and the specific mudras, or hand gestures, required for the correct representation of the deity. The work serves as a record of traditional sculptural design, capturing the formal requirements of religious art without the distraction of decorative embellishment. It provides a clear view of the structural relationship between the divine figure and the architectural frame.
