A detailed Pahari miniature painting by Mola Ram, depicting a narrative scene from the Rukmini Mangal featuring King Bhishmaka and Shishupala.
This miniature painting originates from the Garhwal school of Pahari art, attributed to the artist Mola Ram. It depicts a narrative scene from the Rukmini Mangal, a text detailing the marriage of Rukmini to Krishna. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: an exterior garden space and an interior architectural setting where the primary dialogue occurs.
On the left, a solitary figure stands in a garden, providing a sense of scale and transition. The right side features an open pavilion, or baradari, where King Bhishmaka sits upon a cushioned dais. He is engaged in a heated discussion with Shishupala, who gestures emphatically while seated before him. The figures are rendered in profile, a characteristic convention of the period, with their status indicated by their elaborate turbans, jewellery, and fine garments. The architecture is defined by clean, white lines, contrasting with the muted green of the exterior and the patterned textiles of the interior floor coverings.
Technically, the work employs opaque watercolour on paper, a medium that allows for the precise application of detail and colour. The artist uses a flattened perspective, typical of Indian miniature traditions, which prioritises narrative clarity over spatial depth. The colour palette is balanced, utilising soft earth tones alongside specific saturated hues for the clothing of the central figures. The floral motifs on the textiles and the stylised plants in the garden demonstrate the decorative sensibilities of the Garhwal style. This piece offers a view into the courtly life and mythological storytelling traditions of 18th-century North India, capturing a moment of political and familial tension through gesture and posture.
