Alfred Wallis, a retired Cornish fisherman, began painting in his late sixties following the death of his wife. Working primarily on salvaged cardboard and scraps of wood, he utilised household paints to record his memories of the sea. His approach to composition ignores traditional perspective, favouring a flattened, intuitive arrangement that prioritises the relative importance of objects over their physical distance from the viewer.

In this work, a steamship occupies the centre of the frame, surrounded by heavy, textured waves. The sea is rendered with thick, gestural brushstrokes that convey the motion of the water, while the ship itself is depicted with a more precise, linear clarity. The background remains a flat, unmodulated ochre, a common feature in his work that isolates the subject from any specific geographic context. Wallis often used the natural edges of his cardboard supports to define the boundaries of his scenes, a technique that reinforces the object-like quality of his paintings.

His lack of formal training allowed him to develop a visual language free from academic constraints. The simplicity of his forms and the directness of his application appealed to members of the St Ives group, including Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, who encountered his work in 1928. They recognised a raw authenticity in his depictions of maritime life. This piece captures the essence of his practice: a solitary vessel navigating a turbulent environment, painted with the economy of a man who spent his life at sea.
