A detailed hanging scroll by Miyagawa Isshō depicting courtesans in the Shimabara district observing demonic figures, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This hanging scroll by Miyagawa Isshō depicts a scene from the Shimabara pleasure district in Kyoto. The composition features three courtesans positioned behind the wooden bars of a structure, observing a pair of small, demonic figures below. The artist employs a delicate ink-wash technique for the architectural elements and the figures, contrasting with the more fluid, calligraphic lines used to render the surrounding foliage and the demons themselves.
The work is mounted on a decorative silk border featuring floral motifs, which frames the central painting. The inclusion of calligraphy at the top of the scroll provides a narrative layer, linking the visual imagery to the cultural practices of the Edo period. Isshō, a student of Miyagawa Chōshun, was known for his focus on the daily lives of urban residents and the inhabitants of the pleasure quarters. His approach to figure drawing captures the specific fashion and hairstyles of the mid-eighteenth century, providing a window into the social customs of the time.
The interaction between the figures inside the enclosure and the supernatural entities outside suggests a ritualistic or theatrical context. The demons, rendered with a sense of movement and caricature, offer a playful counterpoint to the composed, static figures of the women. The use of negative space within the composition allows the viewer to focus on the narrative exchange between the two groups. This piece demonstrates the technical precision of the Miyagawa school, particularly in the handling of ink on silk and the integration of text with pictorial elements. It remains a representative example of the genre painting that flourished during the mid-Edo period, documenting the intersection of folklore and urban life.
