Shap in Cumbria is seen through a peaceful riverside landscape, where a ruined abbey tower and an arched stone bridge stand among green pastures and pale farm buildings.
The abbey near this village was founded in the late twelfth century in the secluded valley of the River Lowther. It housed Premonstratensian canons until its surrender in January 1540, after which parts became farm buildings and stone was reused elsewhere.
At Shap, a broken square tower rises above green fields and low stone buildings. The blue Lowther reflects part of the ruin, while a hump-backed bridge crosses on the right. Field boundaries and a timber gate divide the pasture beyond. White flower heads and pink blooms brighten the near bank in soft, cloud-filtered summer sunshine.
