A 1913 etching by Anders Zorn depicting two bathers in shallow water, showcasing the artist's mastery of line and light.
Anders Zorn, a Swedish artist of international repute, produced this etching in 1913. The work depicts two female figures standing in the shallows of a body of water. Zorn is widely recognised for his technical mastery of the etching medium, a discipline he pursued alongside his painting career. His approach to the copper plate involves rapid, confident lines that capture the play of light upon the water surface and the human form.
The composition relies on the contrast between the figures and the surrounding environment. Zorn uses varying densities of cross-hatching to suggest the depth of the water and the reflections cast by the bathers. The figures appear naturalistic, their forms rendered with a sense of immediacy that avoids excessive detail. The background, consisting of a bank with vegetation, is suggested through abbreviated strokes, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the light and the water.
Zorn often returned to the theme of bathers in his graphic work, frequently setting them in the Swedish countryside. This specific piece demonstrates his ability to convey atmosphere through minimal means. The lines are fluid, reflecting his background as a painter who prioritised the capture of movement and light. The print displays the characteristic signature of the artist in the lower corner, a common feature of his limited edition etchings. As a practitioner of the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century etching revival, Zorn utilised the medium to explore tonal values and the tactile quality of the paper. This print offers a clear view of his method, where the white of the paper functions as the primary source of light, balanced against the dark, rhythmic lines of the etched ink.
