A formal portrait of Emperor Shah Jahan from the Late Shah Jahan Album, featuring delicate gold work and symbolic imperial iconography.
This exquisite miniature, attributed to the court artist Hashim, depicts the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in a formal, symbolic portrait. The work originates from the Late Shah Jahan Album, a collection of paintings and calligraphy assembled during the mid-seventeenth century. Hashim, a master of portraiture known for his precise observation, captures the Emperor in profile, a standard convention for royal depictions in the Mughal court. Shah Jahan stands upon a small, verdant mound, holding a spinel in one hand and resting his other hand upon the hilt of a long Deccan sword. The sword serves as a symbol of his military authority and his expansionist policies in the Deccan region.
The composition is highly structured, featuring a golden halo surrounding the Emperor's head, which denotes his divine right to rule. Above him, two winged figures descend from the clouds, offering a crown, further reinforcing the imperial narrative. The surrounding border is decorated with delicate floral motifs and figures, a characteristic feature of the lavish albums produced for the Mughal elite. The palette is balanced, utilising soft blues for the sky and muted earth tones for the landscape, contrasted by the gold leaf applied to the halo and decorative elements.
Hashim's technique demonstrates a high degree of control, particularly in the rendering of the Emperor's translucent jama and the fine details of his jewellery. The inclusion of a lion and a gazelle at the base of the page suggests a peaceful, ordered realm under the Emperor's governance. This piece provides a clear insight into the aesthetic priorities of the Mughal court, where art functioned as a medium for political and personal identity. The work remains a primary example of the technical refinement achieved by artists working under the patronage of Shah Jahan.
