A refined Mughal miniature portrait of Emperor Shah Jahan, rendered in opaque watercolour and gold by the court artist Hashim.
This portrait depicts the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in profile, a characteristic format for royal iconography during the seventeenth century. The artist, Hashim, was a court painter known for his precise observation and ability to capture the likeness of the imperial family and high-ranking officials. The emperor is shown wearing a turban adorned with a plume and pearls, his attire reflecting the refined aesthetic of the Mughal court. His jewellery, including a multi-strand pearl necklace with a central pendant, indicates his status and wealth.
The composition is contained within an oval frame, a common device in Mughal portraiture to focus attention on the subject. The background is a soft, muted turquoise, which contrasts with the dark green border surrounding the portrait. The use of gold leaf in the turban and jewellery adds a subtle luminosity to the work. Hashim employs a fine brush technique, particularly visible in the rendering of the emperor's facial features, beard, and the texture of his garments. The profile view allows for a clear delineation of the nose, brow, and jawline, which were essential elements in establishing the identity of the ruler.
Such portraits were often produced for inclusion in imperial albums, known as muraqqa, which were commissioned by the emperors to document their lineage and court life. These albums were highly valued for their artistic quality and historical record. This piece demonstrates the technical proficiency of Mughal artists in the use of opaque watercolour and gold, materials that allowed for the creation of detailed, jewel-like images. The work remains a clear example of the portraiture style that flourished under the patronage of the Mughal dynasty, prioritising clarity, elegance, and the representation of imperial authority.
