A delicate etching by James McNeill Whistler, capturing his nephew in a quiet, seated pose with precise cross-hatching and expressive line work.
This etching by James McNeill Whistler depicts his nephew, Arthur Seymour Haden, in a quiet, seated pose. Whistler produced this work during his early period in London, a time when he engaged closely with his brother-in-law, the surgeon and etcher Francis Seymour Haden. The composition reflects the artist's developing mastery of the copper plate, utilising varied line weights to define the form of the child against a loosely sketched background.
Whistler employs a combination of dense cross-hatching and lighter, more spontaneous strokes to model the figure. The boy is shown in profile, his gaze directed away from the viewer, which creates a sense of detached observation. The texture of the clothing is rendered with precise, rhythmic lines, while the surrounding space remains largely unworked, allowing the subject to occupy the centre of the composition without distraction. This approach to negative space is characteristic of Whistler's broader graphic output, where the economy of line often conveys as much information as more heavily worked areas.
As a member of the Etching Revival, Whistler sought to elevate the status of the medium, treating it as an independent art form rather than a reproductive tool. This print demonstrates his ability to capture a fleeting moment with technical precision. The plate shows signs of the artist's hand, with visible marks and light scratching that add to the immediacy of the image. It remains a fine example of nineteenth-century portrait etching, capturing the likeness of a family member with both technical rigour and a sense of personal intimacy. The work is printed on paper that retains the subtle warmth of the original period, making it a suitable addition for those interested in the history of printmaking and the development of Whistler's graphic style.
