A nineteenth-century French furniture design plate from Le Garde-Meuble, featuring a detailed lithograph of a sideboard and matching table.
This lithographic plate, numbered 2141 from the publication Le Garde-Meuble, presents a formal design for a sideboard (servante) and a matching table. Published in Paris by Veuve E. Maincent Ainé, these plates provided cabinet makers and interior decorators with precise visual references for contemporary furniture styles. The print demonstrates the technical precision required for trade catalogues of the late nineteenth century, focusing on structural clarity and ornamental detail.
The upper portion of the composition depicts a sideboard featuring glazed cabinet doors with geometric fretwork. The design incorporates carved elements at the cornice and base, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the period. Below, the table is shown with turned legs and a central support structure, maintaining a consistent stylistic language with the sideboard. The draughtsmanship is clean, prioritising the legibility of the furniture forms over atmospheric effects.
Le Garde-Meuble was a significant resource for the French furniture industry, documenting the transition of styles throughout the latter half of the nineteenth century. These plates were often produced using lithography, which allowed for the inclusion of subtle colour washes to indicate wood tones and decorative accents. The work provides a clear view of the construction methods and decorative motifs favoured by Parisian workshops during this era. By presenting the items in a front-facing, orthographic manner, the artist ensures that the proportions and joinery details remain the primary focus for the viewer. This print is a record of industrial design history, capturing the intersection of craftsmanship and commercial publication in nineteenth-century France.
