A striking Post-Impressionist self-portrait by Meijer de Haan, capturing the artist in traditional Breton attire with the bold, simplified forms of the Pont-Aven school.
Meijer de Haan, a Dutch painter who spent significant time in Brittany, produced this self-portrait during his association with the Pont-Aven school. The work reflects the influence of Paul Gauguin, with whom de Haan shared a studio and artistic philosophy during the late 1880s. The composition employs the Synthetist style, characterised by flat planes of colour and bold, simplified forms that move away from traditional naturalistic representation.
The artist depicts himself wearing local Breton attire, a choice that signals his immersion in the regional culture and his departure from his earlier, more academic training in Amsterdam. His expression is sombre, with a direct gaze that engages the viewer. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, including deep browns, ochres, and muted blues, which create a sense of gravity and introspection. The background, featuring a window frame, provides a structural element that anchors the figure while maintaining the flattened pictorial space typical of the period.
De Haan's application of paint is deliberate, with visible brushwork that adds texture to the surface of the canvas. The lighting is focused, casting shadows that define the contours of his face and the folds of his heavy cloak. This portrait captures a specific moment in the artist's career, documenting his transition toward the experimental techniques that defined the avant-garde circles of the time. The work remains a significant example of the cross-pollination of ideas between artists working in the rural centres of France during the late nineteenth century. It provides insight into the personal and professional identity of an artist who sought to reconcile his heritage with the radical aesthetic shifts occurring in European painting.
