Beskrivning
A dynamic Futurist self-portrait by Gino Severini, utilising fragmented geometric planes to explore motion and perspective.
Gino Severini, a central figure in the Italian Futurist movement, produced this self-portrait during his time in Paris. The work demonstrates his engagement with the analytical methods of Cubism, which he adapted to capture the Futurist interest in motion, simultaneity, and the fragmentation of form. Unlike the static portraits of the nineteenth century, this image presents the artist through a series of intersecting planes and geometric facets.
The composition relies on the overlapping of visual information, suggesting the subject is seen from multiple angles at once. Severini employs a palette of cool blues, whites, and earthy ochres to define the structure of his face and attire. The sharp, angular lines break the figure into segments, creating a sense of kinetic energy. The spectacles and the tie provide recognisable anchors within the otherwise deconstructed space, allowing the viewer to identify the subject despite the heavy abstraction.
Severini moved to Paris in 1906, where he became acquainted with Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. This exposure to the Parisian avant-garde is evident in the way he treats the picture plane. He does not seek to replicate a photographic likeness, but rather to represent the psychological and physical experience of the individual in a modern, industrialised world. The work reflects the broader European interest in breaking away from traditional perspective, favouring a dynamic approach that prioritises the internal logic of the painting over external reality. This print captures the precision of Severini's brushwork and the calculated nature of his geometric arrangements, offering a clear view of his contribution to early twentieth-century modernism.
