Self-Portrait and Portrait of his Wife - Balthasar Denner

A pair of eighteenth-century miniature portraits by Balthasar Denner, depicting the artist and his wife with technical precision.

This pair of miniature portraits, executed in 1738, depicts the artist Balthasar Denner alongside his wife. Denner, a German painter active during the early eighteenth century, gained recognition for his meticulous approach to portraiture. These works demonstrate his technical precision, particularly in the handling of facial features and the subtle gradations of tone achieved through watercolour on vellum.

The composition presents the subjects within oval frames, a common format for personal portraiture of the period. Denner is shown wearing a powdered wig and a draped garment, while his wife is depicted in a simple, elegant dress. The soft lighting and neutral backgrounds focus attention on the expressions of the sitters. The artist's signature and the date are visible within the composition, providing clear documentation of the work's origin.

Denner's practice often involved a high degree of finish, which is evident in the smooth application of colour and the careful rendering of textures. These miniatures reflect the domestic and professional life of an artist who moved between various European courts, including those in London and Amsterdam. The preservation of these portraits within a single frame suggests they were intended to be kept together as a personal memento. The restrained palette and balanced composition are characteristic of the period's interest in clarity and naturalistic representation, avoiding excessive ornamentation in favour of a direct, honest portrayal of the subjects.
