A traditional Japanese woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicting a formal marriage negotiation scene from the Edo period.
This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicts a formal meeting between two parties, arranged with the intention of marriage. The scene is set within a domestic or temple environment, indicated by the architectural elements and the raised wooden platform where the male figures are seated. Koryūsai, a former samurai who transitioned to printmaking, is known for his refined depictions of contemporary life and his mastery of the hashira-e format, though this work follows a more traditional vertical composition.
The figures are rendered with the characteristic elegance of the mid-Edo period. The women, dressed in patterned kimonos, stand to the left, while the men occupy the foreground and centre. The artist employs a balanced use of line and colour, typical of the ukiyo-e tradition, to convey the social tension and decorum inherent in such a meeting. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted reds to define the architectural structure and the garments of the subjects.
Koryūsai was a prolific artist who produced a significant body of work during the 1770s and 1780s. His prints often capture the nuances of social interaction, from the subtle gestures of the figures to the specific details of their attire. This particular work provides a glimpse into the customs of the period, where marriage negotiations were conducted with careful attention to status and etiquette. The composition is structured to guide the eye across the scene, from the standing women to the seated men, creating a narrative flow that suggests the quiet gravity of the occasion. The print is a fine example of the genre, demonstrating the technical skill involved in multi-block printing during this era.
