A 1913 figure study by Egon Schiele, featuring a seated woman in a hunched pose, rendered with sharp, expressive lines and bold red accents.
Egon Schiele produced this study in 1913, a period during which his draughtsmanship reached a high level of technical precision. The work displays his characteristic approach to the human form, where the body is treated as a series of angular, expressive lines rather than a soft, rounded volume. The figure is positioned in a hunched, seated posture, with her back turned towards the viewer, creating a sense of psychological withdrawal.
Schiele employs a sparse, economical use of colour. The pale, unmodulated skin tones of the subject contrast with the bold, flat application of red pigment on the fabric behind her. This use of colour serves to isolate the figure against the negative space of the paper. His line work is deliberate and sharp, capturing the tension in the subject's shoulders and the curve of her spine with minimal strokes.
Unlike the academic tradition of the period, which prioritised idealised proportions, Schiele focused on the raw, physical reality of his models. The composition is deliberately off-centre, with the figure occupying the left side of the frame, balanced by the stark red block of colour. The small, bird-like signature mark, typical of his work from this era, is visible on the right. This piece demonstrates his ability to convey emotional weight through posture and line alone, stripped of unnecessary background detail or narrative context. It remains a clear example of the Viennese Expressionist style, where the focus is placed upon the subjective experience of the artist and the vulnerability of the subject.
