A precise academic study of a seated male nude, rendered in black and white chalk on grey paper by Geerlig Grijpmoed in 1786.
This academic study by Geerlig Grijpmoed, dated 1786, captures a seated male figure in a pose that emphasises anatomical precision and classical form. Executed in black and white chalk on grey paper, the work demonstrates the rigorous training typical of late eighteenth-century Dutch art academies. The artist employs the toned paper to create a mid-tone ground, allowing for the application of white chalk to define highlights on the musculature of the back and shoulders, while black chalk provides the necessary depth and shadow.
The figure is depicted from the rear, with the head turned slightly to the left. This orientation allows the artist to focus on the structure of the spine, the scapulae, and the gluteal muscles. The inclusion of a staff or support behind the figure adds a sense of stability to the composition. The inscription at the top left, 'Secundum Praemium', indicates that this drawing was awarded the second prize in an academy competition, a common practice for students to demonstrate their mastery of the human form.
Grijpmoed uses a controlled, methodical approach to shading, building up the volume of the body through subtle transitions. The drawing reflects the period's focus on the study of the antique and the human anatomy as the foundation of artistic practice. The drapery beneath the figure is rendered with equal attention to light and shadow, providing a grounding element for the seated pose. This piece offers a clear view into the pedagogical methods of the era, where the ability to render the nude figure with accuracy was the primary measure of a student's technical proficiency. The work remains a fine example of the disciplined draftsmanship required of artists within the Dutch academic tradition.
