Beskrivning
A detailed hand-coloured engraving of the Sea-side Finch from John James Audubon's seminal work, The Birds of America.
This print is Plate 93 from the original double-elephant folio edition of The Birds of America, published between 1827 and 1838. John James Audubon, a French-American ornithologist and painter, sought to document every bird species in North America in their natural habitat. This specific work depicts the Sea-side Finch, now known as the Saltmarsh Sparrow, perched amongst wild roses.
The composition follows Audubon's characteristic approach of placing the subjects within a botanical setting. The birds are rendered with scientific precision, capturing the subtle variations in plumage and the specific posture of the species. The surrounding flora, including the delicate pink blossoms and green foliage, provides a sense of the bird's environment. The engraving process, executed by Robert Havell Jr., translates Audubon's original watercolour studies into a medium suitable for wide distribution. The hand-colouring adds a layer of detail that brings the natural forms to life, maintaining the clarity required for scientific observation.
Audubon's work remains a primary reference for historical ornithology. His method of depicting birds at life size, often in active poses rather than static profiles, changed the standard for natural history illustration. This print offers a view into the early 19th-century scientific endeavour to catalogue the natural world. The paper tone and the clean lines of the engraving reflect the production standards of the period. It is a piece that documents both the avian life of the American coast and the technical skill of the engravers who worked alongside Audubon to complete his ambitious project.

Artist Biography
John James Audubon
He was born illegitimate in 1785 in Les Cayes, Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), the son of a French merchant and a Creole woman. He was sent to America at eighteen to avoid Napoleonic conscription. He was also a serial fabricator: he claimed his father was an admiral (he was a captain), said his family had been imprisoned in the Bastille (they had not), and invented frontier stories about fighting wolves and sleeping in igloos. He ran a dry-goods store in Kentucky and was jailed for bankruptcy in 1819.
The paintings themselves are extraordinary: precise, dynamic, and composed with a narrative quality that goes beyond scientific illustration. His legacy is contested. The National Audubon Society and several regional chapters dropped his name in 2023 because of his documented history as an enslaver. He died in 1851.
