Beskrivning

A precise botanical study of Scilla amoena by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, featuring delicate stipple engraving and hand-coloured details from the Les Liliacées series.

Pierre-Joseph Redouté, often referred to as the Raphael of flowers, produced this study of Scilla amoena as part of his monumental work, Les Liliacées. Published in Paris between 1802 and 1816, this collection documents the bulbous plants of the lily family. Redouté served as the court artist for Empress Joséphine, who maintained a collection of rare plants at the Château de Malmaison. His work reflects the scientific rigour of the period, combined with a precise aesthetic sensibility.

The print employs the stipple engraving technique, a method that allows for subtle gradations of tone and colour. This approach captures the delicate texture of the petals and the structure of the bulb with clarity. The composition is isolated against a clean, neutral background, which directs the viewer's attention to the botanical form. The plant is depicted in its entirety, including the root system, which provides a complete record of the specimen. The blue tones of the flowers contrast with the muted greens of the foliage, maintaining a balance that is characteristic of Redouté's output.

Redouté worked with a team of skilled engravers to translate his original watercolours into print. The resulting images were finished by hand, ensuring that each plate retained the nuance of the initial observation. This print is a representative example of the intersection between art and natural history during the early nineteenth century. It documents the plant with accuracy while maintaining a formal elegance. The inclusion of the Latin and French names at the base of the plate follows the conventions of botanical taxonomy of the era. This print offers a view into the systematic documentation of flora that defined the botanical studies of the French Enlightenment and the subsequent Napoleonic period.

Artist Biography

Pierre Joseph Redoute

Pierre-Joseph Redouté narrowly avoided execution during the French Revolution, saved by his reputation as a botanical artist. Despite his association with the aristocracy, his talent was recognised, allowing him to continue his work documenting the plant life at the royal gardens. This close call adds a layer of intrigue to the man behind the delicate watercolours.

Redouté dedicated his career to botanical illustration, achieving fame for his accurate and aesthetically pleasing depictions of flowers, especially roses. Working primarily in watercolour, his technique combined scientific precision with artistic flair. He captured the minute details of each plant specimen, while also conveying their beauty and vitality. His prints, widely circulated, brought the wonders of the botanical world to a broader audience.

Today, Redouté's prints appeal to collectors who appreciate both art and science. His images offer a window into a bygone era of botanical exploration, while his elegant compositions complement contemporary interiors. The timeless appeal of his floral studies makes them a sophisticated addition to any collection.
