A detailed trompe-l'oeil etching by D.F. Robart, featuring a collection of scattered prints, maps, and documents arranged on a patterned surface.
This work is a classic example of a quodlibet, a genre of trompe-l'oeil art designed to deceive the eye by depicting a collection of scattered objects, such as prints, maps, and documents, arranged on a flat surface. D.F. Robart employs this technique to create a visual puzzle, where the items appear to be resting upon a patterned textile background. The composition includes a variety of printed ephemera, ranging from small topographical sketches and a maritime scene to a portrait head and a map.
Central to the arrangement is a print depicting the allegorical figures of Anger and Despair dragging Cupid toward the tomb of the painter Gerard de Lairesse. This specific inclusion serves as a meta-commentary on the nature of art and memory. The surrounding items, including an almanac and various small engravings, contribute to the sense of a cluttered desk or a collector's portfolio. The artist uses precise line work to distinguish the textures of the paper, the folds in the documents, and the subtle shadows that suggest depth despite the overall flatness of the arrangement.
Produced in 1764, the print reflects the Dutch interest in intellectual curiosity and the classification of knowledge during the eighteenth century. The inclusion of the title 'Fielebout' on one of the documents adds a layer of literary reference, typical of the period's penchant for wit and allusion. By presenting these disparate elements as a singular, cohesive image, Robart invites the viewer to examine each component individually, effectively turning the act of looking into a process of discovery. The work remains a fine example of the technical skill required to execute such complex, layered compositions in the medium of etching.
