A detailed Neoclassical etching by Luigi Ademollo depicting narrative scenes from the Trojan War, featuring a large ritual scene and three smaller vignettes.
This etching by Luigi Ademollo presents a narrative sequence derived from the Homeric tradition of the Trojan War. Ademollo, a Milanese artist active during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, frequently engaged with classical themes, often applying a theatrical sensibility to his compositions. The primary scene occupies the upper register, depicting a ritualistic offering performed by Trojan women before an altar. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner, a characteristic approach for artists working within the Neoclassical tradition, who sought to emulate the clarity and order found in ancient relief sculpture.
The lower register is divided into three distinct panels, each providing a secondary vignette of the conflict. These smaller scenes function as a visual catalogue of the epic, showing moments of combat, mourning, and preparation. The artist employs a fine, precise line quality to define the drapery of the garments and the musculature of the figures, ensuring that the emotional intensity of the narrative remains legible despite the density of the composition. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of depth within the architectural setting of the main scene, while the smaller panels maintain a flatter, more graphic quality.
Ademollo was known for his prolific output in both fresco and printmaking, often collaborating with architects to decorate interiors in a manner that integrated classical motifs with contemporary design. This print reflects his interest in the dramatic potential of Greek mythology, focusing on the human response to the chaos of war. The work provides a clear example of how Neoclassical artists utilised historical subjects to explore themes of duty, sacrifice, and the inevitability of fate. The print is executed with a focus on anatomical accuracy and balanced proportions, adhering to the aesthetic standards of the period.
