A classic yamato-e illustration depicting a scene from the Tales of Ise, featuring courtly figures and irises in the traditional Tosa School style.
This work depicts a classic episode from the Ise monogatari, a tenth-century collection of waka poetry and associated narratives. The Tosa School, known for its adherence to traditional Japanese painting styles, employs the yamato-e technique here. This style prioritises native subjects and a distinct aesthetic, often featuring flattened perspective and decorative use of gold leaf.
The scene captures a moment of courtly leisure. Figures are rendered with fine, precise lines, their facial features simplified in the hikime-kagibana style, which translates to 'slit eyes and hook nose'. The figures wear elaborate, patterned robes that indicate their status within the Heian-period court. The composition is divided between the interior space, defined by a folding screen, and the exterior garden, where a zigzagging wooden bridge crosses a stream bordered by irises.
The use of gold leaf across the background and foreground creates a sense of luxury and separates the narrative space from the mundane world. The irises, rendered in white and soft blue, provide a seasonal marker, suggesting early summer. The Tosa School artists maintained these conventions over centuries, ensuring that the visual language remained consistent with the literary source material. This print captures the refined atmosphere of classical Japanese literature, focusing on the intersection of human emotion and the natural world. The balance between the structured architecture and the organic forms of the plants reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where art functioned as a visual extension of poetic expression.
