This work comprises a series of narrative panels originally forming the reverse side of the Maesta, the monumental altarpiece commissioned for the Siena Cathedral. Duccio di Buoninsegna, a central figure in the development of Sienese painting, utilised tempera and gold leaf to articulate these theological sequences. The panels depict various episodes from the final days of Christ, including the Entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the Betrayal, and the Crucifixion.

Visually, the work demonstrates the transition from the rigid Byzantine tradition towards a more humanistic approach.
