A 1891 oil painting by James Charles depicting children gathering fruit in a rural farmyard, executed in a characteristic British Impressionist style.
James Charles, a painter associated with the New English Art Club, produced this work in 1891. The composition captures a quiet moment within a rural farmyard, focusing on children engaged in the seasonal task of gathering fruit. Charles employs a loose, painterly technique that aligns with the broader interest in light and atmosphere common among British artists of the late nineteenth century who looked toward French plein air practices.
The scene is constructed through a series of broken brushstrokes, particularly evident in the rendering of the thatched roof and the foliage. The palette consists of muted earth tones, ochres, and soft greens, which work to unify the figures with their surroundings. A young girl in a light dress stands near the centre, her form partially obscured by the fruit-laden bushes, while other children are positioned throughout the yard. To the right, the structure of a barn provides a sense of enclosure, and the presence of livestock adds to the domestic, agrarian character of the setting.
Charles was known for his ability to observe everyday life without resorting to sentimentality. His approach here is observational, prioritising the quality of natural light as it filters through the overcast sky and settles upon the textures of the stone wall and the thatched roof. The painting reflects the artist's interest in the relationship between human activity and the rural environment. By focusing on the mundane actions of children in a farmyard, Charles provides a glimpse into the social and physical realities of the English countryside during this period. The work remains a representative example of his mature style, where the application of paint is as much a subject as the narrative itself.
