This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomine depicts a narrative moment derived from the Chushingura, the famous tale of the forty-seven ronin. As a member of the Torii school, Kiyomine worked within a tradition closely linked to the kabuki theatre. His output often focused on actors and scenes from popular dramas, reflecting the cultural interests of the Edo period.
The composition is organised across a triptych format, allowing for a wide, cinematic view of the figures. The scene features a group of women and children in a garden setting, with architectural elements of a traditional Japanese residence visible in the background. The figures are rendered with the characteristic grace of the period, wearing patterned kimonos that demonstrate the artist's attention to textile design. The lines are precise and controlled, typical of the woodblock technique where the artist's drawing is transferred to the block by a carver.
Kiyomine employs a balanced arrangement of figures, guiding the viewer's eye across the three panels.
