A refined woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei, capturing a Noh dancer with delicate lines and subtle colour, characteristic of the Japanese surimono tradition.
This woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei depicts a performer in a Noh dance, captured with the refined aesthetic typical of surimono. Surimono were privately commissioned prints, often exchanged among poetry circles, and they frequently feature high-quality paper, metallic pigments, and subtle embossing. Hokkei, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, demonstrates his mastery of line and composition in this work. The figure is rendered with a focus on the elegant, sweeping lines of the traditional costume, which contrasts with the restrained posture of the performer. The inclusion of a small bird perched upon the walking stick adds a whimsical, naturalistic element to the otherwise formal theatrical subject.
The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned centrally against a largely negative space, allowing the viewer to focus on the details of the patterned trousers and the delicate facial features of the elderly dancer. The calligraphy at the top of the print provides context, likely referencing a poem or a specific performance, which was common in the surimono tradition. The colour palette is intentionally muted, relying on soft tones to maintain the sophisticated, understated quality that patrons of these prints valued.
This print reflects the technical precision of the Edo period printmaking tradition. The fine lines of the garments and the subtle shading of the bird demonstrate the skill required in carving and printing such delicate works. As a piece of Japanese art history, it provides a glimpse into the cultural life of the period, where theatre, poetry, and visual art intersected in the private collections of the urban elite. The work remains a fine example of the surimono genre, prioritising artistic subtlety over the more commercial, bold aesthetics found in standard ukiyo-e prints of the time.
