A refined woodblock print by Takashima Chiharu depicting a performer in traditional Noh theatre costume, executed in the classic Shin-hanga style.
This woodblock print by Takashima Chiharu captures a moment from a Noh performance, a traditional Japanese musical drama that has been performed since the 14th century. The artist employs the aesthetic principles of the Shin-hanga movement, which sought to revitalise traditional ukiyo-e techniques by incorporating Western elements of light and shadow while maintaining the discipline of the Japanese woodblock medium.
The figure is depicted in profile, dressed in the elaborate costume characteristic of Noh theatre. The performer wears a heavy, patterned outer robe, or haori, featuring circular motifs and a distinct floral design on the extended sleeve. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted teals, soft blacks, and subtle earthy tones that allow the texture of the paper to remain visible. The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the movement and posture of the actor. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy to the left of the figure provides context, likely referencing the specific play or a poetic line associated with the performance.
Takashima Chiharu was active during a period when Japanese printmaking was undergoing a transition. This work reflects the technical precision required for multi-block printing, where each colour is applied through a separate carved block. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the contours of the costume and the posture of the actor without unnecessary ornamentation. The print avoids the dramatic flair often associated with kabuki prints, opting instead for the stillness and gravity inherent in Noh. The result is a quiet, observational piece that documents the visual language of Japanese classical theatre. It serves as a record of the costume and movement styles preserved by practitioners of the art form during the early 20th century.
