Escher, a Dutch graphic artist, is known for his mathematical precision and his interest in the natural world. This work demonstrates his ability to render biological subjects with high fidelity, contrasting the smooth, chitinous surfaces of the insects against the rough, textured surface of the sphere they manipulate.
The composition is tightly framed, focusing the viewer on the physical interaction between the beetles and their burden. Escher employs a monochromatic palette, using varying densities of ink to create depth and shadow. The light source appears to come from the upper left, casting subtle highlights on the beetles' backs and defining the rounded form of the sphere.
