A fine woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei depicting the mythological deity Sarutahiko, rendered with the technical precision characteristic of Edo-period surimono.
This woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei depicts the deity Sarutahiko, a figure from Japanese mythology. Hokkei, a pupil of Katsushika Hokusai, produced this work as part of a series titled The Cave Door of Spring. The print is a surimono, a genre of privately commissioned, limited-edition prints often exchanged among poets and connoisseurs. These works typically feature high-quality paper and sophisticated printing techniques, such as metallic pigments and embossing, which distinguish them from commercial mass-produced prints.
Sarutahiko is shown in a dynamic, muscular pose, conveying his role as a guardian deity. His expression is intense, with wide eyes and a furrowed brow, reflecting the dramatic nature of the mythological narrative. He is dressed in elaborate, layered armour, rendered with precise lines and a muted colour palette of ochre, slate blue, and charcoal. The composition is balanced by the inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper left, which provides context for the scene and integrates the literary element common in surimono.
The background is minimal, allowing the figure to occupy the visual space. The use of colour is restrained, relying on subtle shifts in tone rather than high-chroma saturation. This print demonstrates the technical skill of the Edo-period woodblock carvers and printers who worked alongside artists like Hokkei. The fine lines of the armour and the expressive quality of the face demonstrate the attention to detail required for such small-format, high-status prints. As a piece of Ukiyo-e, it captures the intersection of folklore, poetry, and visual art that defined the cultural output of the period.
