Anders Zorn, a Swedish artist of international standing, produced this etching, titled Sappo, in 1917. Zorn is widely recognised for his mastery of the etching medium, a skill that allowed him to capture light and texture with remarkable economy. In this work, the artist depicts a woman seated upon a rocky shore, accompanied by a dog. The composition relies on Zorn's characteristic use of rapid, directional lines to define both the human form and the surrounding water.
The etching process enabled Zorn to experiment with the interplay of shadow and reflection. The water, rendered through a series of horizontal and slightly curved strokes, creates a sense of movement that contrasts with the relative stillness of the figures. The woman, shown in a naturalistic pose, interacts with the animal, grounding the scene in a quiet, domestic moment.
