A precise architectural study by Josephus Augustus Knip, documenting the Roman basilicas of Santa Sabina, Sant’Agnese fuori le Mura, and Santa Costanza.
This composition by Josephus Augustus Knip presents a dual study of significant Roman ecclesiastical architecture. The upper portion of the sheet depicts the Basilica of Santa Sabina, situated upon the Aventine Hill. Knip captures the structure against a backdrop of distant mountains, employing a restrained palette that emphasises the topographical character of the site. The lower section shifts focus to the outskirts of the city, featuring the Basilica of Sant’Agnese fuori le Mura alongside the circular form of the Mausoleum of Santa Costanza.
Knip, a Dutch painter who spent several years in Italy during the early nineteenth century, produced numerous studies of this nature. His approach is characterised by a precise, observational technique, often utilising light washes of watercolour to define form and shadow without obscuring the underlying graphite construction. These drawings served as preparatory records for larger works or as personal documentation of his travels through the Italian peninsula. The artist avoids romanticised embellishment, choosing instead to document the physical reality of these historic buildings as they appeared during his residency in Rome.
The work demonstrates a clear interest in the structural geometry of the buildings. By isolating these subjects against a largely empty background, Knip directs the viewer to the specific architectural features of the sites, such as the campanile of Santa Sabina and the distinct rotunda of Santa Costanza. The use of negative space is intentional, allowing the architectural forms to exist as independent objects of study. This sheet provides a clear view into the working methods of a nineteenth-century artist engaged in the tradition of the Grand Tour, where the systematic recording of classical and medieval sites formed a core component of artistic practice. The preservation of these studies allows for a direct comparison between the state of these monuments in the early 1800s and their current appearance.
