A 1922 Dada collage by Kurt Schwitters, featuring a layered arrangement of found paper, typography, and geometric forms.
Kurt Schwitters, a central figure in the Dada movement, developed his own unique approach to collage which he termed Merz. This work, dated 1922, demonstrates his method of repurposing discarded materials into a cohesive visual structure. By incorporating fragments of printed ephemera, typography, and textured paper, Schwitters transforms everyday refuse into a deliberate composition.
The arrangement relies on the juxtaposition of geometric shapes and torn edges. A circular colour wheel fragment sits near the top, providing a point of contrast against the muted, earthy tones of the surrounding paper scraps. The inclusion of text fragments, such as the label at the base, serves as a reminder of the original context of these materials, yet they are stripped of their initial purpose to function as formal elements within the frame. The composition avoids traditional perspective, favouring a flat, layered surface that invites the viewer to examine the physical quality of the materials themselves.
Schwitters utilised these assemblages to comment on the chaotic nature of post-war society. By elevating the mundane to the status of art, he questioned the boundaries between high culture and the debris of industrial life. This piece reflects his interest in the materiality of paper and the graphic potential of typography. The work remains a primary example of how the artist manipulated found objects to create a sense of order from fragmentation, maintaining a balance between the random nature of the source material and his own rigorous aesthetic control.
