A classic ukiyo-e depiction of the kabuki actor Sanjo Kantaro II, rendered with the bold lines and elegant composition typical of the Kaigetsudō school.
This work depicts the kabuki actor Sanjo Kantaro II portraying the legendary figure Urashima Taro. Attributed to Kaigetsudō Ando, the founder of the Kaigetsudō school, the composition reflects the characteristic style of the early eighteenth-century Edo period. The artist focuses on the monumental presence of the figure, utilising bold, sweeping brushwork to define the contours of the actor's elaborate costume.
The figure is presented in a dynamic, slightly turned posture, which allows for a detailed display of the patterned kimono. The textile designs, featuring geometric shapes and floral motifs, demonstrate the attention to fashion that defined the ukiyo-e genre. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones, ochre, and subtle blues, provides a sense of historical age and refinement. The calligraphy at the top of the composition integrates text with the visual form, a common practice in Japanese hanging scrolls of this era.
Kaigetsudō Ando is recognised for his depictions of beauties and actors, often characterised by their large scale and confident line quality. This piece avoids the cluttered backgrounds found in later woodblock prints, opting instead for a clean, neutral space that draws the eye directly to the actor. The work provides a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the period, where the focus remained on the elegance of the pose and the visual weight of the subject. The print captures the essence of the theatrical tradition, preserving the specific costume and mannerisms associated with the role of Urashima Taro as it would have been performed on the Edo stage.
