A dramatic history painting by Jan Steen depicting the biblical betrayal of Samson by Delilah, rendered with theatrical flair and detailed characterisation.
Jan Steen, a painter known for his domestic scenes and humorous narratives, approaches the biblical story of Samson and Delilah with a theatrical sensibility. This work depicts the moment of betrayal, where Samson is captured by Philistine soldiers after Delilah has shorn his hair. The composition is crowded, typical of Steen's approach to complex storytelling, with numerous figures occupying the architectural space.
Delilah sits prominently on the right, her posture relaxed, while Samson kneels in the centre, bound and vulnerable. The scene is framed by heavy red drapery, which adds a sense of stagecraft to the event. Steen incorporates various details, such as the dog in the foreground and the scattered coins on the table, to ground the mythological narrative in a tangible, almost mundane reality. The lighting is dramatic, directing the viewer's eye across the chaotic assembly of soldiers and onlookers.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on the psychological tension between the two protagonists, Steen presents the event as a bustling, multi-layered spectacle. The architectural setting, featuring arches and a distant view, provides a sense of depth, though the primary action remains tightly packed in the foreground. The palette is dominated by deep earth tones, punctuated by the striking red of the curtains and the yellow of Samson's garment. This work demonstrates Steen's ability to manage large groups of figures while maintaining a clear narrative focus, reflecting his training and his position within the Dutch Golden Age tradition.
