A refined nineteenth-century engraving of the Salvator Mundi by Italian artist Antonio Dalcò, published in Florence by Luigi Bardi.
This engraving by Antonio Dalcò presents a traditional iconographic depiction of the Salvator Mundi, or Saviour of the World. The composition follows established conventions for this subject, showing a frontal, bust-length figure of Christ with his hands crossed over his chest. A simple, linear halo encircles his head, providing a subtle geometric contrast to the soft, naturalistic rendering of his features and hair. The artist employs precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to build volume and shadow, creating a sense of depth within the figure while maintaining a clear, readable form.
The print is a fine example of nineteenth-century reproductive engraving, a medium used to disseminate religious imagery and masterworks to a wider audience. The text at the base identifies the publisher as Luigi Bardi, a well-known Florentine print seller active during the mid-nineteenth century. The inclusion of such details indicates that this work was intended for circulation as a high-quality devotional print. The paper retains its original margins, showing the plate mark and the formal typography typical of the period's commercial print production.
Dalcò demonstrates a high level of technical control in the treatment of the fabric and the subtle gradations of light across the face. The expression is calm and meditative, consistent with the theological intent of the Salvator Mundi motif. By focusing on the figure against a dark, atmospheric background, the artist directs the viewer's attention to the central subject. This print provides an insight into the aesthetic preferences of the era, where clarity, balance, and technical precision were highly valued in the production of religious art for the home or private study.
