A 1906 Symbolist painting by Franz von Stuck, depicting the biblical Salome in a dramatic, nocturnal setting.
Franz von Stuck, a founding member of the Munich Secession, produced this depiction of Salome in 1906. The work captures the biblical figure in a moment of performative ecstasy. Her body is angled, with one arm raised and her head tilted back, creating a sense of movement against a dark, star-flecked background. The composition focuses on the contrast between the illuminated figure of Salome and the shadowed presence of the servant holding the platter with the head of John the Baptist.
The painting reflects the fascination with the femme fatale archetype prevalent in European Symbolist art at the turn of the century. Von Stuck employs a specific colour palette, using deep blacks and blues to create an atmospheric, nocturnal setting. The light emanating from the platter provides a cold, blue glow that illuminates the severed head, drawing the viewer's eye to the macabre subject matter. The figure of Salome is adorned with jewellery, adding to the decorative quality of the piece.
Von Stuck designed the frame himself, which is an integral part of the work. The architectural elements of the frame, featuring stylised columns, reinforce the theatrical nature of the scene. This approach to framing was common in his practice, as he viewed the painting and its surround as a unified object. The work is a clear example of his interest in mythological and historical themes, rendered with a focus on dramatic lighting and psychological tension. The surface of the painting shows careful attention to the texture of the skin and the metallic sheen of the jewellery, balanced against the void-like darkness of the background. This print captures the specific tonal range and the eerie quality of the original composition.
